Freie Generation Reporter: I heard in the Q&A after your screening, that you (Pablo) met the boys in Cuba during a workshop on making short movies. How did Antuán and Leonel catch your attention?
Pablo Briones: So I was looking for one kid for a short story. I went to a little town, Pueblo Textil and after a couple of minutes I had already like ten kids around me that wanted to be on film. Maybe after a couple of hours, both of them (Antuán and Leonel) came, with like an attitude (saying) “what are you doing on my territory". Like they have in the film. They told me: “why are you only looking for one kid for the film, both of us want to play”. I said okay, but I really am looking only for one and he (Antuán) asked me, what is happening in the film, like pitch your film (laughs). So I said that it is about a kid, that loses his cat, so he has to go out and look for (it) and Antuán told me, “but if it's both of us, we will find the cat faster”. So I loved the fact, that they already started discussing the script, I was immediately convinced, that they had great personalities for the film and then afterwards I started to write a new story based on their everyday life.
FGR: Could you ask them, what they thought, when they first saw you?
Antuán (translated by Pablo): He says, “Pablo, it's a really long time ago!”
How long ago is it?
Leonel and Antuán (Pablo): Three years now from the time we met. They knew, that the film school was making a workshop and that they will come one day or the other to make a casting. So when they saw me, they guessed, that I was one of the workshop.
Do they remember, why they wanted to do the film and join you?
Antuán (Pablo): Because of the boredom we got of the town.
How came the decision to do a feature film together afterwards?
Antuán (Pablo): He said, that they really enjoyed making the short film and once it was done, they loved it, so they were definitely motivated to keep working to make a feature (film).
And how was the decision for you to make a long film and to come up with a script for that?
I was also totally convinced of their potential and how good they were together. They don't care about the camera and that was great. And they were able to take indications from the script, that was, in many cases, based on their everyday life, and do something with that. I didn't ask them to stay, to change the light or make a movement with the camera, it was more that my cameraman and I were adapting to them. So when we finished the edit of the short film I wanted to come back and do something more ambitious with them. So I was working for 5 or 6 months and calling them (cause I live in Geneva) to discuss with them to keep working on my script.
So you worked on it together? Did you spend some time with them while writing the script?
No, I wrote it in Geneva, but with elements from our conversations by phone. And the time frame of the story was their holidays. So we were trying to predict what will happen on that holiday and the fact is, that he (Antuán) was moving to Havana, to his father's place, so that was a little bit the point the story was about.
So how is it for them to be apart now, how is their friendship?
Leonel (Pablo): Normal, natural, because Antuán goes back to Pueblo Textil for every holiday. And they are still always together when he comes back.
Do you have plans to make something together again?
Leonel: Si!
Pablo: There is a temptation to keep working together, especially now, when we finally showed the film.
How was it for you (the boys) to tell others, that you are making this movie?
Leonel (Pablo): It was natural for the other people, because the film school is close to their town, so it happens from time to time, that they shoot a film there.
Pablo: It is a very nice place for that, people are used to the camera.
How was it to show it then to others and to watch it here on the Berlinale with your parents?
Antuán (Pablo): I was stressing a lot. But I enjoyed it.

Aber zusammen finden wir die Katze viel schneller! - Ein Interview über dem Film Baracoa
Freie Generation Reporter: Ich habe in dem Publikumsgespräch nach dem Screening gehört, dass du (Pablo) die beiden Jungs in Kuba während eines workshops zum Thema Kurzfilme kennengelernt hast. Weshalb sind dir Antuán und Leonel aufgefallen, warum wolltest du ein Projekt mit den beiden machen?
Pablo Briones: Also, ich suchte nach einem Kind für eine Kurzgeschichte. Ich fuhr in eine kleine Stadt, Pueblo Textil und nach ein paar Minuten hatte ich schon um die 10 Kinder um mich herum versammelt, die alle Teil des Films sein wollten. Nach ein paar Stunden vielleicht, als ich schon Fan aller Kinder der Stadt war, kamen die beiden (Antuán and Leonel) mit einer Einstellung die sagt „was machst du hier in meinem Revier“, so wie mensch sie auch im Film sieht. Sie fragten mich, was ich hier mache und ich erzählte, dass ich ein Kind für einen Kurzfilm suche. Sie sagten, „warum suchst du nur nach einem Kind, wir wollen beide spielen“. Ich meinte okay, aber ich suche nur eine Person und er (Antuán) fragte mich, was denn eigentlich in dem Film passiert, pitche mir deinen Film (lacht). Ich erklärte also, dass es um ein Kind geht, das seine Katze verliert und dann nach ihr suchen muss und er (Antuán) sagte: “Aber zusammen finden wir die Katze viel schneller!”. Ich fand es super, dass sie gleich anfingen, das Script zu diskutieren und ich war sofort überzeugt davon, dass sie tolle Persönlichkeiten für den Film hatten. Danach fing ich an ein neues Drehbuch zu schreiben, das auf deren Alltagsleben basiert. fGR: Könntest du sie fragen, was ihnen durch den Kopf ging, als sie dich das erste Mal gesehen haben?
Antuán (Übersetzung durch Pablo): Er sagt: „Pablo, das ist wirklich lange her!“
Wie lange her denn?
Leonel and Antuán (Pablo): Vor drei Jahren haben wir uns kennengelernt. Sie wussten, dass die Filmschule einen Workshop anbietet und dass an irgendeinem Tag Menschen kommen, um ein Casting zu veranstalten. Als sie mich gesehen haben, haben sie vermutet, dass ich zu denen gehöre.
Können sie sich daran erinnern, warum sie den Film machen wollten?
Antuán (Pablo): Weil sie so gelangweilt von der Stadt waren.
Wie kam die Entscheidung danach einen Langfilm gemeinsam zu machen?
Antuán (Pablo): Er sagt, dass sie es sehr genossen haben, den Kurzfilm zu drehen und diesen dann toll fanden als er fertig war, also waren beide definitiv motiviert einen Langfilm zu drehen.
Wie war die Entscheidung für dich einen Langfilm zu drehen und dafür ein Drehbuch zu schreiben?
Ich war vom Potential und der Chemie der beiden überzeugt. Ihnen ist die Kamera egal und das ist super. Und sie waren fähig, die Angaben aus dem Drehbuch zu übernehmen, welches meistens auf deren wahrem Leben beruhte, und daraus etwas zu machen. Ich habe sie nicht darum gebeten, irgendwo stehen zu bleiben um das Licht oder Kameraeinstellung ändern zu können, sondern ich und mein Kameramann haben sich ihnen angepasst. Als wir den Schnitt des Kurzfilms fertig hatten wollte ich zurück gehen und etwas Ambitionierteres machen. Ich arbeitete für 5 oder 6 Monate daran und führte Telefongespräche mit ihnen (ich lebe in Genf) um das Drehbuch zu diskutieren.
Also hast du mit ihnen gemeinsam daran geschrieben? Habt ihr Zeit beim Schreiben des Scripts miteinander verbracht?
Nein, ich habe es in Genf geschrieben, aber mit Elementen unserer Telefongespräche. Der Rahmen der Geschichte waren die Ferien der Beiden. Wir haben versucht vorherzusehen, was in ihnen passiert und die Sache war die, dass Antuán nach Havana umziehen würde, zu seinem Vater, das war einer der Handlungsstränge der Geschichte.
Wie ist es für die beiden, nicht in der selben Stadt zu wohnen, wie ist die Freundschaft nun?
Leonel (Pablo): Normal, natürlich, denn Antuán kommt jede Ferien zurück nach Pueblo Textil. Und sie verbringen immer noch den ganzen Tag zusammen wenn er zurück kommt.
Gibt es Pläne, noch einmal zusammen zu arbeiten?
Leonel: Si!
Pablo: Es gibt natürlich die Versuchung weiterhin zusammen etwas zu machen, vor allem nun, wo wir den fertigen Film zeigen konnten.
Wie war es für euch (die Jungs) anderen von dem Film zu erzählen, was haben eure Eltern gesagt?
Leonel (Pablo): Es war natürlich für Andere, denn die Filmschule ist in der Nähe von ihrer Heimatstadt und es passiert häufiger, dass dort ein Film gedreht wird.
Pablo: Es ist ein guter Ort dafür, die Menschen sind an die Kamera gewöhnt.
Wie war es dann den Film anderen zu zeigen und ihn hier auf der Berlinale zu schauen?
Antuán (Pablo): Es war sehr stressig. Aber ich habe es genossen!
